The Essential School of Painting is honoured and proud to invite Alexander ‘Sandy’ Moffat to London to launch his new book Facing the Nation: The Portraiture of Alexander Moffat written Bill Hare. Bill Hare is an art historian and Honorary Fellow in Scottish art history at the University of Edinburgh, and through this book makes a first survey on Sandy’s fifty years as an artist, going so far as to describe him as ‘the most important portrait painter since (David) Wilkie in the first half of the 19th century’.
Together with the book launch we will have a discussion conducted by our Artistic Director Alison Harper that will span Sandy’s career followed by Q&A from the audience.
ABOUT SANDY
Alexander ‘Sandy’ Moffat is an Artist, Fountainhead, Teacher, Historian, Philosopher, Political Commentator, Royal Scottish Academician and Author. There are many ways one could describe, explain or define Sandy Moffat. The singular impact he has had on the art scene in Scotland, and the wider United Kingdom, over the last 5 decades is quietly (much like his character) astounding.
Sandy is one of the few artists of his time who has made creative portraiture a central plank of his artistic career. His works can be found in numerous national, public and private collections from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Arts Council of Great Britain, Yale Centre for British Art and The Pushkin Museum, Moscow.
