Jost Münster

Jost Münster was born in Ulm, a city in the south German state of Baden-Württemberg. He studied Fine Art and Intermediales Gestalten in Stuttgart Fine Art Academy and thereafter an MFA at Goldsmiths University London.

Jost, through his work, experiments with colour and paint texturization whilst pushing the limits of representation. Munster’s interplay of forms, textures and rhythms creates both a series of individual works, but equally an installation bound by his varying use of speeds, punctuations and chords of colour, which move seamlessly through the works. His work invites a genuinely formal response but also question their own status as either paintings or sculptures.

Layering materials is a significant method for Münster, sometimes painting over the top of older works, renewing their surfaces and leaving small traces of what was there before. This accentuates a defining preoccupation – the relationship between foreground and background, and, facilitates a conversation between the old and new. Subtraction or the striping away pictorial detail is another process through which Münster plays with the tension between something that appears weathered and depleted, or conversely entirely full of fresh content.
