Life Painting with Tim Patrick: Mondays 6-9pm May 16th to Jun 27th 2022

Fee: £200

This course is limited to 12 participants only. All art materials are included on the course with exception of canvas that can be purchased from the school. For course details see below.

The human figure has been a subject of compelling interest for artists throughout history from the earliest cave paintings to contemporary artists such as Paula Rego, Lynette Yiadom Boakye and Michael Armitage. Painting the naked or clothed figure and the relationships and stories between the model and their surrounds is endlessly fascinating and difficult. In this six week course, students are invited to spend a day painting directly from the model, developing their skills and ideas with Tim Patrick a highly experienced artist who has worked with the figure in traditional and temporary contexts.

Working from the live model students will be offered guidance to develop their painting from exploring the fundamentals of mixing colours and preparing a surface to creating a narrative. There will be 1-1 and group tuition and demonstrations by the tutor. Having an opportunity to work from a pose for longer periods will give students a chance to go deeper into their painterly investigations on painting flesh and the figure. By the end of the course, you will have had the chance to develop more substantial, sustained paintings from life, looking to artists past and present and benefitting from painting in a group context.
Whilst the course will be focussed on painting from the model, the emphasis will lie in helping students find an approach which they can perpetuate beyond the life room, nurturing idiosyncrasies and interests and celebrating the plurality of approaches to painting.
