Artist’s Statement

I love the act of painting from life – it is a treasure trove of light, shadow, time passing – being in attendance with the subject, waiting on it, allowing yourself to be led by looking. So much of my work is about place – the spaces and rooms we live and move through. Seeing how familiar surrounds are transfigured by a change of light and passage of time throughout a day; the bed, the living room, the pattern of a curtain, are all aspects of a place that are both familiar and overlooked, and yet when held as the subject of a painting, are transformed and elevated. I’ve always been drawn to paint from what I see – being fascinated from a young age by paintings that really ‘looked’ like something. Over time, this has changed to paintings that really ‘felt’ like something, exploring the threshold between image and material, and the excitement when paint becomes image. There is a sense of urgency when painting from life which I feel imbues the painting with a sense of lived experience; of a human’s encounter with the world in front of them. I’m interested in artists throughout history who worked from life, from direct observation, and in whom this quality of encounter can be seen. George Bellows, Manet, Van Gogh are all important to me, and in whose work one can read the traces of the artist having been with their subject. In the slip of a brush or rush of strokes to build a reality in paint, it is this relationship between the medium and the action of painting in pursuit of the image that most captivates me. Having initially studied in Florence, and the Royal Drawing School, my interests and passions, whilst rooted in the tradition and craft of painting, are firmly located in the present; in the encounter with my experience of being in the present. It is in the light and colours of an environment, in excavating the colours from life, and discovering the particulars and subtleties of a place, that I am most excited to paint, and what I hope is felt through the paintings also.
