The Painting Year I is a practical course which aims to fill in all the gaps you never knew you had in your understanding and practice of painting. It is suitable for beginner to intermediate level in painting and for returning painters who have been away from painting and artists from other disciplines looking to change or discover painting. Amongst other things this course, with ten week per term, covers materials beginning with surfaces, from traditional canvas and wood panels to newer materials such as aluminium and linoleum, moving through a range of types of paint including oil, acrylic, watercolour and the mediums and additives available for each, both traditional and recent developments and as it says on the title delves into methods and idea development.

Please note this term has 3 Bank Holidays 1st May, 8th May for the King’s Coronation and 29th May. To keep in time with the usual term time we will have a class on the 1st of May and only the 8th and 29th will be the holidays.

About the artist-tutors
Johanna Melvin
Johanna was born in Limehouse, east London and worked for many years as a self-taught illustrator before studying BA Hons (Fine Art) at The School of Art, Architecture & Design, (London Guildhall University at that time). From 2006 –15 Jo held the post of Editions Manager at the Whitechapel Gallery, working with leading contemporary artists, printmakers and curators to pioneer a programme of limited edition prints and objet d’art as fund-raisers for the Gallery. Throughout this time Jo continued to make her own work, exhibiting five times at The Royal Academy of Art and Flowers Gallery respectively, as well as The Contemporary Art Society among others >>>read more >>>
Tim Patrick
Tim (b. 1988) is a London based Artist who initially studied portraiture at the Charles Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy (2008-10) prior to that he studied in Kingston University (2006-07). Following his studies in Florence Tim joined the University of Brighton (2010-13) and thereafter the Royal Drawing School (2014-15). In 2019 Tim was award with the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Grant of emerging Figurative artists and from August 2020 to January 2021 the Artist in Residence, Trinity Buoy Wharf. His work can be found in both private and public collections and has been shown in several London and national exhibitions including the 2018 Threadneedle Prize and the Priseman-Seabrook Collection of 21st Century Figurative Painting >>> read more >>>
