£240 for 3 weeks on Friday
The human figure has been a subject of compelling interest for artists throughout history from the earliest cave paintings to Lucian Freud and contemporary artists Jenny Saville and Dana Shutz.
Painting the naked figure and the relationships between the model and their surrounds is endlessly fascinating and difficult. In this four week course, students are invited to spend a day painting directly from the model, developing their skills and ideas.
Working from life, the beginning of the session will consist of quick sketches before progressing into a long pose that will last the duration of the course. From the fundamentals of mixing colours and preparing a surface, students will be offered guidance to develop their painting, 1-1 and group tuition and demonstrations by the tutor. Having an opportunity to work from the same pose for four weeks will give students a chance to go deep into their painterly investigations on painting flesh and the figure. By the end of the course, you will have had the chance to develop more substantial, sustained paintings from life, looking to artists past and present and benefitting from a group painting in a group context.
Whilst the course will be focussed on painting from the nude figure, the emphasis will lie in helping students find an approach which they can perpetuate beyond the life room, nurturing idiosyncrasies and interests and celebrating the plurality of approaches to painting.
