Neal Tait is a figurative painter who works at the edge of abstraction. Lungley Gallery describes his figures as “solitary presences” who turn from the viewer and withhold their gaze. Art UK, writing on his early White Cube portraits, records faces “always with eyes averted”. Artsy describes recognisable forms that “morph and bleed into each other”, held between figuration and abstraction. Tait’s own word for the quality is a kind of “sealed-in-ness”, which he links to the contained, displaced characters of Fassbinder’s cinema.
A painting may begin with a found image, a person, a photograph, a snippet of newspaper, but the figure, he says, is discovered in the act of painting itself, arriving fully formed at some point in the process. Drawing comes first. He speaks of using deliberately inert paint to slow the process down and to make room for slow, sustained looking, and of wanting to make work that is recognisable and yet stands apart from ordinary experience.
Tait studied at Chelsea School of Art and took his MA at the Royal College of Art, and held a residency at the British School at Rome. He has exhibited internationally for three decades, with four solo exhibitions at White Cube in London and others in New York, Los Angeles, Düsseldorf, Milan and Dublin, a museum solo at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium, and group exhibitions including Watercolour at Tate Britain and the eleventh Lyon Biennial. A monograph on his work was published by Other Criteria, and his painting has been reviewed in Frieze across many years. In 2025 he was selected by Chris Ofili for Frieze London’s Artist-to-Artist.
What he brings to ESOP is a practice built on patience and thought. For Tait, painting is a slow and uncertain search in which the image is found rather than illustrated, and the discipline behind it is sustained, close looking.
