Jennifer Campbell graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2014, where she received a full AHRC scholarship and gained an MFA in painting. She also holds a BFA in sculpture from Norwich University of the Arts (2008). Over the last decade she has regularly exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, as well as contributing articles to various publications, including Arty and Garageland magazine.
Jennifer uses paint as both image and substance. Her practice occupies the space between pictorial surface and physical object, with paint acting as a transformative medium. Her work explores the fluid nature of identity, deconstructing cultural ideas around gender, the continuity of the self and the sensation of being a physical body in space and time. She makes paintings on a variety of surfaces, often nontraditional, allowing the materiality of the surface to influence what she paints and how this imagery develops. She places importance on thinking through making, letting the painting lead the way forward and always allowing for interruption, chance and change. This approach is a way of destabilising any formulas that emerge and keeps her process in a state of perpetual flux.
