Painting in Egg Tempera with Doug Safranek: 25 – 29 March 2017 (Saturday to Wednesday)

New York based egg tempera expert Doug Safranek comes to London.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from a master egg tempera artist. Doug Safranek is an internationally renowned artist who paints thought provoking portraits of New Yorkers and emotive scenes of  the vibrant city.

Doug, a thirty year master in egg tempera painting, with the unique ability to turn the ordinary everyday in something amazing with a deep sensitivity to colour, substance and circumstance. Doug teaches a five day course at the Essential School of Painting on how to produce contemporary paintings using this medium associated with renaissance art.

This class includes a tour of the Sainsbury wing of the National Gallery with Doug looking and discussing tempera art through the ages.

Since ancient times, artists have blended egg yolk, powdered pigment, and water to create delicately luminous paintings of remarkable durability. The great altarpieces of 14th century Siena and the 15th-century masterpieces of the Florentine Renaissance were painted in egg tempera. Eclipsed by linseed oil based paint at the end of the 15th century, egg tempera was revived by English figurative painters during the second half of the 19th Century and, in the United States, the medium was a favorite of magic realists and others working during the early and mid-20th century.

Students will discover that egg tempera is quite economical, versatile, environment-friendly, and well-suited for contemporary use. They will learn how to prepare a panel with rabbit skin glue-based gesso, how to transfer drawings to the panel, and how to layer tempera paint using both traditional and contemporary techniques.
