This is a course about the material. Over six evenings you will work across still life, portrait and landscape, each genre asking something different of you technically and opening a different set of possibilities.

Every evening turns on one principle and one way of handling paint. You work on your own painting throughout, supported by demonstration, guided exercises and individual feedback, learning to build a surface, make a decision and hold to it.

Alongside the practical work your tutor brings in painters, contemporary and art historical, who have faced the same problems. The discussion turns on their methods, their materials and the thinking behind them.

Methods introduced and practised

  • Wet in wet painting
  • Impasto and textured application
  • Thin paint and glazing
  • Colour mixing strategies
  • Compositional planning before a brush is loaded

What you will take away

  • A working understanding of how oil and acrylic behave
  • Ways of building depth, texture and atmosphere
  • Colour harmony, composition and brushwork under guidance
  • The confidence to try methods you have not tried before
  • A varied body of work made over the six evenings
