Building on the foundations established in Approaches to Abstraction, this year-long course is the recommended next step for those who have completed that programme (or an equivalent introductory course) and are ready to broaden and deepen their practice in abstraction. Taught by professional artist Johanna Melvin, it is equally suited to experienced abstract painters looking to refresh or reboot their practice. If you have not taken Approaches to Abstractionbut can demonstrate your proficiency in abstract painting through an artist statement and a portfolio of recent work, we welcome your application. If you’d like to discuss whether this course is a good fit for you, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

Course Structure

Term 1

  • Visual Language & Technical Guidance: Refine your use of colour, form, motif, and composition through targeted one-to-one support. You’ll experiment with oil, acrylic, and other materials while undertaking practical tasks—such as abstracting from the figure, still life, or landscape—to strengthen your personal “voice.”
  • Research & Experimentation: Dive into a range of surfaces and techniques, engage in constructive group critiques, and explore contemporary painting exhibitions through occasional gallery visits.

Term 2

  • Advanced Techniques: Continue building on the skills introduced in Term 1 with ongoing one-to-one tutorials.
  • Professional Practice Focus: Expand your knowledge of creating opportunities, building resilience in the art world, and boosting your professional profile through group discussions and presentations.

Term 3

  • Real-World Application: Culminate your learning in a contemporary group painting exhibition, gaining valuable hands-on experience in all facets of mounting a successful show.
  • Portfolio Development & Exhibition Planning: Work toward a substantial body of work throughout the year. Midway through, begin planning an end-of-year group exhibition—selecting a venue, organizing logistics, curating the show, and promoting the event.

Additional Course Highlights

Comprehensive Skill Development: Strengthen both your technical and conceptual skill sets, pushing the boundaries of expressive paint handling.

Access to Resources: Enjoy a spacious studio, an extensive art library, and expert insights into materials, tools, and techniques.

Contemporary Engagement: Benefit from gallery visits, guest lectures, and networking opportunities with art professionals
