Course Description

Unlock your creative potential on this practical and inspiring online evening class with artist Guy Allott. This course is designed to transform your sketchbook from a notebook of ideas into a dynamic tool for exploration, experimentation and creative development.

Across 8 Thursday evenings, you’ll engage in structured tasks and open-ended exercises that help you discover fresh ways of seeing and making images. Working directly in your sketchbook, you’ll explore diverse approaches to mark-making, observation, composition and personal visual language. Each session blends creative practice with reflection, dialogue and supportive group feedback.

Whether you’ve kept a sketchbook for years or are just starting, this course will help you build a confident and sustained practice that enriches your art and thinking.

What you’ll do:
  • Develop a consistent sketchbook practice that supports your ideas and artistic growth.
  • Work with a range of drawing and visual experimentation tasks designed to expand how you see, think and record.
  • Engage in discussions of relevant artists, approaches and creative strategies.
  • Share work and receive constructive feedback in a welcoming online group setting.
  • Explore ways to make your sketchbook both a source of ideas and a creative laboratory.
Who it’s for:

This course is perfect for artists, designers and creative thinkers who want to invigorate how they use their sketchbooks — whether for observation, creative problem-solving, experimentation or simply to enjoy making. All levels are welcome; the emphasis is on process, curiosity and play rather than technical perfection.

Outcomes:

By the end of the course, you’ll have:

  • A richer, more confident sketchbook practice.
  • A sketchbook full of insightful, varied and personally relevant work.
  • Fresh ways of connecting ideas to visual expression.
  • A supportive creative network and increased motivation to continue your practice.
