On this two day online class , Dan Coombs will show how to use the figure to communicate emotion and to create an affect in the viewer. We will explore different poses and compositions, using single isolated figures, or arrangements of multiple figures, to build narratives and create compositions that , in the words of Francis Bacon, ‘directly affect the nervous system”. In this class we will explore how the body carries and communicates emotions and unconscious thought. We will break down the division between figuration and abstraction in order to allow the possibilities for painting that arise from the figure to be as far reaching and various as possible. Each student will be encouraged to follow their own intuition in order to give form to their own unique voice.
We will work with the renowned performance artist Shardae Rose Angel in order to create an image bank of drawings that will be used to create the final painting . The drawings, poses and concepts will be inspired through looking at the work of other painters both contemporary and historical. Dan Coombs will demonstrate a range of techniques and devices that will allow , over the two day period of the course , to create studies and smaller paintings leading to a final finished work. The course is open to painters both abstract and figurative who are interested in exploring how the subjects of painting can be communicated through the speaking body.
