This is the fifth year that John Myers is holding this wonderful and well received class. Set up on the peaceful side of the river Thames in London we take in life on the water and on the streets; each day is never the same in the ever-changing light and scenery.
About the course
This course runs over 5 days. Each day after a quick morning discussion we get on with drawing and painting. Much emphasis will be placed on the handling of the paint and seeing the forms in relation to the spacial content of the painting. You will learn to freely and decisively structure directly with paint, often with large directional brush strokes in an effort to capture the ever changing light, the movement in the sky and the shadows on the landscape.
Students will be provided with individual tutoring on the spot, and there will be a group “crit” at the end of each day, enabling each one to develop his or her individual painting insight. Much importance will be given to such pictorial qualities as movement, structure, luminosity, and spacial tension. All the technical difficulties of working with Oil, Acrylic and Water-colour will be addressed.
About John Myers
John Myers is a master artist and highly experienced tutor. He is the 2009 winner of the Grand Prix Maryse Anderbouhr award from Taylor association des artistes in Paris and a graduate of Fine Arts and Art History from the distinguished École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1972 to 1977).
From 1986 to 2002 John, a fluent French speaker, taught drawing and painting at the City of Paris’s École des Beaux-Arts and
was a visiting lecturer
at the prestigious British School of Paris.
Prior to resettling in the south of France in 2017 John in the midst of his busy schedule of making art and exhibiting, both in the United Kingdom and in France, taught at the Essential School of Painting.
John’s relation with nature and landscapes has been paramount in his work. He has a great love of painting the Thames. During his time in London he immersed himself into the life of this iconic river. As an artist he has worked to deepen his understanding of matter and how to manipulate paint in an ever-changing environment. during a 2008 interview with Isabelle Kersimon for the exhibition ‘La vibriation de la matiere’ (The Vibration of Matter) John described this relationship…
“My relationship to matter is paramount, although it is not its aesthetic aspect that matters to me. I’m talking about my relationship to matter because my paintings are characterised by a certain thickness. I always rework my paintings, in a slow maturation, adding material, until at some point the rhythm of the painted landscape appears to me right, when the tensions of shapes and colours finally seem balanced….” To find out more on John Myers click here
