This autumn join David Mach RA on Safari to the luxurious Makanyane Safari Lodge in malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa. Madikwe is home to the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, black rhino AND the rare white rhino, you will have ample opportunity to paint, draw and photograph the African landscape and its amazing wildlife. Makanyane is a beautiful lodge located on 1800 hectares of privately owned land which is exclusively reserved for its guests.
The lodge caters for a total of 16 guests ensuring on the game drives there are no more than 2-3 open-sided vehicles; giving you plenty of space to see the animals in their natural habitat without the hustle and bustle of noisy tourist vans.

About David Mach RA
David Mach is one of the UK’s most successful and respected artists, known for his dynamic and imaginative large scale collages, sculptures and installations using diverse media, including coat hangers, matches, magazines and may other materials. The Scotsman describes his work as ‘big on gesture and big in proportion, it demands your attention and gets it’.
Born in 1956 in Fife, David attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. Following which he completed his MA at the Royal College of Art. Amongst his many accolades, in 1988 he was nominated for the Turner Prize He became a Royal Academician in 1998 and in 2000 was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, London.
David received an honorary doctorate from Dundee University in 2002 and in 2004 he was elected an honorary member for the Royal Scottish Academy. David currently currently works from his studio based in London and teaches our post-graduate programme ‘The Bigger Picture’. For more on David please click here
How to sketch on safari…
Ever tried to get a baboon to pause while you looked for the right pencil? That’s just not going to work… the trick is to have your sketch-pad ready and just any pencil at hand to do some super-fast sketches, you want to grab the essence of the moment, more like a snap shot, and the more snap-shots you have of that pesky highly mobile baboon in different positions the more material you have to use for your final drawings and paintings back at camp… Lions on the other hand have over the years learned to slow things down and pause for you. They are rather self-possessed and regal and won’t be caught jumping about like you know who…
