 what does this mean?

Coleman’s Cave by Nuala Flynn 2018 Oil on canvas

The course is designed for those with some prior experience of painting. You may be self-taught or you may even have been to art school. With painting these distinctions no longer hold. Many artists who have been to art school in recent years would like to paint but were not given the technical and/or intellectual support to do so and would therefore turn to other mediums. However once taken by the desire to paint it is hard to shake off. If you are in this category either The Foundation Painting Year or The Painting Year will provide you with what you need, to learn about, practise and develop your painting.

Term One:Tributary Streams – Approaches to painting

Term one consists of a different project every one to two weeks involving starting points both technical and ideas-based including; experimenting with different surfaces, painting from memory, advanced colour workshop, exploring woodcuts, drawing performance and the model, narrative in painting and collage.

Term Two:The River and the Reservoir– Inspiration: looking and making

Ghost of History by Nuala Flynn

Seeking input and inspiration from outside ourselves we will spend two weeks drawing in gallery tours both contemporary and historical including from world art as found in The British Museum. Further technical elements of painting will be explored including how to use resin, encaustic, tempera and masking . There will be projects exploring subject matter such as the symbolism of buildings real or imagined. During the last three weeks of this term the focus will be on personal practise with continuing individual tuition.

The Ship and the Sea: Making and showing

Term Three

These weeks will be devoted primarily to personal practice with one to one tuition and group crits. The emphasis will be on developing and consolidating ideas and progress made in terms one and two and  developing a body of work. There will be the option to participate in the end of year show at the beautiful contemporary art space The Art Pavilion, Mile End Park. Towards the end of the course we will look at professional practise, how to apply for funding, exhibitions and the potential of social media to showcase our work.

Throughout the course Guy and Dan will provide slide shows of artworks when relevant.

Please note: If you are interested in learning about painting techniques and materials from the ground up then the Foundation Painting Year is a comprehensive course on all you need to know from colour mixing to stretching canvasses, painting large and small and how to generate ideas. This course is also taught by Dan Coombs and Guy Allott. If in doubt please contact us for a chat on the phone and/or write to us using the form above.
