Eileen Cooper, Alayrac Series No. 8,
2010, Linocut and monoprint collage

Eileen Cooper RA, best known for her vibrant and distinctive figurative paintings and prints, studied fine art at Goldsmith’s College and the Royal College of Art, London (1971 – 1977). She is currently Head of Printmaking at the RCA, a Royal Academician and a regular exhibitor to the RA Summer Show as well as innumerable group and solo exhibitions. Her current collage exhibition, (3 December 2010—16 March 2011) is on at the Royal Academy.

The aim of this two day class will be to introduce students to different ways of working, using collage as a springboard for your own imaginative compositions. The class will be limited to 11 students places which means that you will get plenty of attention.

Pic 003Eileen’s recent collages currently on show at The RA share an experimental quality, linking together her experience as a painter and printmaker. Many of the themes explored throughout her career are represented and the playful imagery is steeped in narrative and mythological ideas. Less familiar is the juxtaposition of materials including paint, fragments of drawings, linocut prints and Japanese papers.

Cooper’s recent residency in Alayrac, southern France, has inspired the smaller works infusing them with warmth, colour and architecture evocative of the area. These deceptively simple compositions use recurring motifs including silhouetted figures, pottery, trees, fluttering doves, pillars and archways. The larger collages create a sense of drama in different ways. Some use a bolder palette familiar from Cooper’s paintings; others, intriguingly, have an uncharacteristic sparseness.

About Andrew Wamae

Andrew Wamae is the Director and co-founder of the Essential School of Painting (ESOP). He has a deeply held belief in the power of art to transform lives and society, and a particular interest in exploring new models for art education beyond school; championing the twin ideals of excellence and affordability in a highly pressurised sector when university fees are soaring and student/ tutor contact time is at an all time low. Andrew is particularly keen to ensure that the visual arts continue to be supported and thrive well. A creative, innovative and visionary professional, Andrew, in conjunction with his co-founder Alison Harper, has transformed the Essential School of Painting from humble beginnings to an established institution holding from one-day to year-long courses and workshops for all levels of experience; from beginners to postgraduate and professional artists. He has managed to enlist the support of a long list of celebrated artists from multiple fields in the creative industry to teach or lecture at the school or in their studios.
