Student Testimonial: “Ways into Narrative Painting” with Henry Kondracki May 2014

The weekend of May the 17th and 18th was one filled with quiet excitement. Narrative painting can be both daunting and exhilarating and Henry Kondracki didn’t disappoint. From the feedback we got from the students Henry Kondracki came up trumps.

The work the students produced came from their imagination and memory. Each painting a story.

Below is an extract from one of our students which encapsulated the whole experience.

Student Work: Sisters by Ruth Robinson “Ways into Narrative Painting” with Henry Kondracki 2014

“First impressions were of a big airy studio, generous selection of materials as well as paper, and canvases, plus all the little necessary extras that you probably don’t think to bring yourself like masking tape and cling-film. Generous supplies of tea, coffee & biscuits available to keep us going!

The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Henry was so open about discussing his approach to his work and his working practice, and completely demystified the whole process. Henry and Alison were always available and happy to give help and advice when required, but also recognized when it wasn’t, and didn’t hover!

I found Henry’s advice about resolving problems by producing a series of paintings on a theme, instead of concentrating on producing one final product, very useful. It takes the pressure off and the work becomes less ‘precious’ and it gives space for a more relaxed and experimental approach. Henry’s a great teacher and lovely to talk to!

Our lunch sessions in the nearby park were very enjoyable.”
