This course aims to explore the elements of portraiture and figure painting and drawing in both systematic and creative ways. The course will be taught by Alison Harper and Allan Ramsay and visiting artists Dr. Sandy Moffat OBE RSA and Rosemary Beaton. All are prize winning portrait painters who have exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and/or the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Both Allan Ramsay and Rosemary Beaton are first prize winners of the coveted National Portrait Award and have their work in the work permanently in the National Portrait collections as does Dr Sandy Moffat.
The course in detail:
April Term: 25 Apr 2019 to 27 Jun 2019 Half term 30 May 2019
During the first five weeks we will work from sources other than life including photographs, film stills, drawings,memory and imagination,aiming to explore experimental approaches to making images and being open to unexpected and expressive results. For the last four weeks of term we will have a choice between working from the model or from other images in a build up to completing a body of work ready for the end of year show.
Students will have a choice two models to work from except during the first half of term three when we will be working from other images. This class is limited to 13 students plus assistant. This staff /model/ tutor ratio is one of the best in London. We provide drawing and painting (choice of oil or acrylic) materials included in your fee except canvas. If the need arises you will be advised on further specialist materials to buy to accomplish your projects.
This class in limited to 12 students and an assistant. You will be expected to provide your own material though we do provide basic art materials; you will be given a list of some specialist materials to buy when needed.
End of Year Exhibition.¹
At the end of the academic year we will hold an End of Year Exhibition. There is a separate fee of £85 to participate. For more on this click here
End of year exhibition is open to students who have attended a minimum of two terms. If you are joining us during the April term or have only attended one term but would like to participate in the exhibition please contact the school directly with your request.
