Expressive Portraiture: Capturing Likeness with Life
Learn how to bring vitality and presence into your portrait work in this dynamic and supportive short course.
Working directly from a live model, we’ll explore how to create expressive portraits that not only capture the likeness of the sitter but also convey energy, emotion, and character.
Each day will begin with a close look at a selection of inspiring portraits—ranging from historical masterpieces to contemporary interpretations—that demonstrate the many ways artists have gone beyond photographic likeness to say something deeper about their subject.
On the afternoon of the first day, you’ll have the opportunity to work with Alison Harper, who will lead a focused session on using colour subjectively. This practical workshop will encourage you to move beyond literal colour choices and explore how expressive, intuitive use of colour can transform a portrait.
This course is ideal for artists who are comfortable with basic portrait drawing and are now ready to push their work further—moving beyond accuracy to find that elusive spark that makes a portrait truly come alive.
