Painting the light that falls on objects March 31 , 7th & 8th April 2026

Tutor – Rosanna Dean

£240

This three-day Easter course explores how light interacts with form, and how an understanding of colour, temperature and value can transform your painting

Rosanna will focus on colour mixing, with particular emphasis on distinguishing colour temperature and value relationships. Each day will begin with a short talk introducing key theory, which will then be explored through guided practical exercises.

Students will be supported throughout the day—both individually and as a group—as they work through these exercises. The course is structured so that learning builds progressively across the three days, deepening understanding and confidence.

While the exercises are rooted in representational painting and observation, the theoretical and practical knowledge gained can be applied to any style of painting.

About The Essential School Of Painting

The Essential School of Painting (ESOP) is an independent art school in London, built on our belief that painting is a living discipline, progressed through sustained practice. We are a place where painters teach painters, carrying a painter from first steps, through year-long courses, to our postgraduate two-year Advanced Painting Course. For over twenty years, painters of the first rank, Academicians and artists of international standing, have taught, exhibited and spoken in our studios. We openly welcome all to join our community. That welcome is encapsulated in our motto, Animus ad Creandum, the courage to create.
