This special year long course has been designed and will be taught by internationally renowned artist Bob and Roberta Smith. The course ‘The Bigger Picture’ is concerned with thinking about painting in a radically new way and will look at painting as an act undertaken by the artist that has consequences.

We will look both at the process of painting, surface, colour, form, composition and the subject of painting, the personal and political.

Make Your Own Damn Art

Bob and Roberta Smith has devised a course as a response to the crises in postgraduate education. It is aimed at those who wanted to study at postgraduate level but perhaps were reluctant to engage in formal education or to pay the high fees associated with it.

During the course we ask the fundamental question, ‘What kind of artist are you?’ but we critically ask another difficult question, ‘who on earth would be interested in my paintings?’ By addressing this second question we help to engage you in conversations which will root your practice in a community of ideas.

Make Art Not War

As the title of the course suggests we are looking at the bigger picture, i.e. what is beyond the canvas? We are looking at how art works for the individual artist, sometimes alone in their studio, and how they can influence their worlds and the world around them with their art. We are interested in making paintings and the concerns of painting but also we are interested in symbolism, politics, context and your ability to own your practice.

Come back to art school join the ‘Bigger Picture course’ and as Bob says “MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN ART!”

About Andrew Wamae

Andrew Wamae is the Director and co-founder of the Essential School of Painting (ESOP). He has a deeply held belief in the power of art to transform lives and society, and a particular interest in exploring new models for art education beyond school; championing the twin ideals of excellence and affordability in a highly pressurised sector when university fees are soaring and student/ tutor contact time is at an all time low. Andrew is particularly keen to ensure that the visual arts continue to be supported and thrive well. A creative, innovative and visionary professional, Andrew, in conjunction with his co-founder Alison Harper, has transformed the Essential School of Painting from humble beginnings to an established institution holding from one-day to year-long courses and workshops for all levels of experience; from beginners to postgraduate and professional artists. He has managed to enlist the support of a long list of celebrated artists from multiple fields in the creative industry to teach or lecture at the school or in their studios.
