COURSE IN DETAIL
Term One

Detail: The Cut 7 of 12 installation piece by Jessie Brennan Graphite on paper

The structure of the day for the first term will consist of mornings spent initially discussing the group sketchbook (collaborative project) and weekly assignments. Then each session will start off with a short introductory discussion looking at 1-2 of many different topics/techniques of drawing by looking at corresponding artists and their practices. The topics/techniques of the day will range from 'chain reactions' to life drawing. The afternoon session will consist of a sustained individual (or collaborative) project reacting/relating to the morning session.

We will leave the studio periodically to visit some of the local galleries with one long visit per term. In Term One we will visit Tate Modern and, weather permitting, create a collaborative Cityscape drawing along the river.

Term Two

This term will focus on the students initiating either a self-sustained long term project (single project or thematic series) interspersed with group discussion, 1-1 tutorials, and simultaneously continuing a collaborative group project.

The Dancing Doll by Liane Lang

Midway through the term we will have a visiting speaker (Margarita Gluzberg) who will discuss their practice and relationship to drawing.

The structure of the day will consist of mornings spent initially discussing the group sketchbook (collaborative project) and weekly assignments. Followed by alternating between 1:1 tutorials & Breakfast Tutorials (group discussion) focusing on an individual students work. Students who had previously taken The Bigger Picture class will be familiar with this structure.

During this term we will visit The Drawing Room and receive a talk from Mary Doyle Co-Director of the Drawing Room.

Term 3

Westlife Boy by Jessica Voorsanger

Term 3 follows a similar structure to Term 2 with the additional element of studio visit by curators Mary Doyle & Roger Malbert. Mary and Roger will to come in to critique the work in progress with the discussion focusing on professional development and presentation.

The end of the year will culminate in a group show at the beautiful contemporary art space The Art Pavilion Mile End Park.
