A Contemporary Drawing Year – Fridays, 29 Sept 2017 to 6 July 2018

Drawing outside the Box is designed and taught by Jessica Voorsanger , Jessie Brennan and Liane Lang with visiting lecturers Margarita Gluzberg, Mary Doyle and Roger Malbert. The aim of the course is to explore drawing from both both a personal and critical perspective¹.

Annual Fee £1900 – Fee per term £700 on The ESOP instalment plan (see below) Book now to avoid disappointment. This course is limited to 12 students plus an assistant to ensure quality student tutor contact time and to facilitate building a supportive learning community.

Initially there will be short exercises exploring technique, skill and creativity leading the participants into a longer personally selected thematic project. There will be gallery visits, group projects and visiting speakers. Prepare yourself for full immersive days incorporating experimentation, playfulness, technique and discussion. This course will be led by artist Jessica Voorsanger, with artists Jessie Brennan  and Liane Lang as contributing tutors. They are all professional artists with international standing.

The course is divided into three terms of 10 weeks each, beginning with short projects gradually encouraging collaborative and longer projects, culminating in the final term that focuses on professional development and a longer sustained independent final piece.

Each term will see a visiting tutor come in to speak to the group about their work and give tutorials starting with Margarita Gluzberg as the initial visitor in the first term; the final term will have Mary Doyle (Director of The Drawing Room, London) come in to give feedback to the students in a ‘salon presentation’ on site at TheESOP.

The students will ultimately be working towards an exhibition at the beautiful contemporary gallery space The Art Pavilion at Mile End Park.

Jessica Voorsanger as Salvador Dali

Jessica Voorsanger is an American artist living in London. She makes work exploring popular culture with a particular fascination with celebrity.  Where historically this began with a subjective focus on fan adulation the work has come to explore these themes in relation to identity, gender and humour using colour, pattern, performance and interactivity as vehicles within a multi-disciplinarian practice. The work ranges from painting and installation to drawing and performance. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (1987) and her MA in Fine Art from University of London, Goldsmiths College (1993). She has shown extensively from solo and groups exhibitions including: The Whitechapel Art Gallery, Camden Art Centre, Serpentine Gallery, Island 6 Art Center (Shanghai China) and CCAC (San Francisco CA)…read more…

Jessie Brennan is a London-based artist whose practice explores the inter-relations between people and places, informed by their social and political contexts and a direct engagement with the individuals who occupy them. Her practice is research-led and situated, taking the form of drawing, photography, installation, performance, film, writing and publications. Jessie graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2007. Liane Lang is an artist based in London. Born in Germany she studied at NCAD in Dublin and completed a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College followed by a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Academy, where she graduated in 2006. Her work is concerned with notions of animacy, which she investigates through sculpture, photography and video works. Many of Lang’s works examine museum objects and the biographies they attempt to narrate, modes of display and the verisimilitude of art objects, particularly figurative sculptures and political monuments.
