about the school

The Essential School of Painting (The ESOP) is an alternative art school situated in East London, which specialises in drawing and painting courses taught by leading artists such as Ken Currie, Adrian Wiszniewski, Sandy Moffat, Gwen Hardie. At a time when painting and to some extent drawing have been marginalised in many art schools, The ESOP offers positive, intellectually rigorous courses capable of advancing painting in the 21st century.

The ESOP aims to relay the essence and essentials of drawing and painting; with the emphasis on outstanding artist/teachers combined with small class sizes, allowing for maximum tutorial contact time for students.

at The ESOP 2015

Internationally renowned Scottish artist Ken Currie had this to say about his experience of The ESOP “I’m down here at the ESOP painting school in London in Bethnal Green, very interesting place, it’s a very different kind of environment from a normal art school experience, it’s much less institutionalised, much less formal and there’s a sort of real sense of having a proper engagement with some of the students and who are very receptive to new ideas, very receptive to some of the technical aspects that are involved in painting and  I think it’s also a worthwhile experience, an environment that is completely free of some of the kind of very restrictive jargon and theoretical kind of pretensions of what you see in art school these days. It’s a very direct teaching experience I’ve really enjoyed it.”  (Click image for video)

The former Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art Sandy Moffat RSA OBE, largely acknowledged for inspiring and enabling a generation of acclaimed Scottish painters describes The ESOP as currently having “The best Painting Faculty in Britain”.

All are welcome on the day at Chiswick Auction House. The online catalogue will be published from the 3rd of November 2015. For more information please contact the school on admin@theesop.com  with the Subject The ESOP Auction Dec 2015.

About Andrew Wamae

Andrew Wamae is the Director and co-founder of the Essential School of Painting (ESOP). He has a deeply held belief in the power of art to transform lives and society, and a particular interest in exploring new models for art education beyond school; championing the twin ideals of excellence and affordability in a highly pressurised sector when university fees are soaring and student/ tutor contact time is at an all time low. Andrew is particularly keen to ensure that the visual arts continue to be supported and thrive well. A creative, innovative and visionary professional, Andrew, in conjunction with his co-founder Alison Harper, has transformed the Essential School of Painting from humble beginnings to an established institution holding from one-day to year-long courses and workshops for all levels of experience; from beginners to postgraduate and professional artists. He has managed to enlist the support of a long list of celebrated artists from multiple fields in the creative industry to teach or lecture at the school or in their studios.
