Transforming sketches from life into paintings is a regular focus of Burr’s work. Photography is used as a useful visual tool, acting as a back up reference should more information be required. Her work is inspired by landscape as well as the influences of weather and light through the seasons. Oils, pastels, watercolours depict unusual landforms, water, birds, lush vegetation swathed in vibrant colours. The images in her work have both simplicity and depth with a magical unearthly quality that suggests a world beyond the ordinary. Sensitivity is achieved through the building of colour layers and glazes. Lesley will do demonstrations of her painting techniques and guide students though the process of working from life, sketching and developing those into larger scale paintings in the studio.

THE WORKSHOP DETAILS

The first morning of this course will be spent out of doors (weather permitting) recording ideas from life – sketching, using pastels or other mediums. Burr will demonstrate how to select and build up images with pastels. We will then return to the studio to develop the drawings into paintings, using oils and colour layering – another demonstration of working with oils and using sketches. The key focus is to explore your own personal experience of the landscape/ cityscape imagery. Please note if the weather is really wet could you please bring along some of your favourite landscape photographs to work from. All materials are provided including canvas or primed Fabriano Pittoria A1 size paper.
